How Much Automotive Paint Do I Need?

When you're looking for a new body paint color for a vehicle, you may be wondering how much paint to order. The answer is that it depends on a couple of factors:

  • The quality of the paint
  • The size of your vehicle

The Quality Of The Paint Matters

Often times, high quality automotive paint costs more than low quality automotive paint. It's partly because low quality paint has less pigment. This means you may need to apply multiple coats of the paint for the vehicle to look good.

It's important to use automotive paint with high quantity of pigment because:

  • You won't need to apply as many coats
  • The paint will look better when it's on the vehicle
  • There's less risk of fading (as UV rays break down pigment and cause it to oxidize)

You would likely save more money by getting a bucket of high quality automotive paint, as opposed to several buckets of low quality paint.

The Size Of The Vehicle Matters

How much paint you need to order depends on how big the vehicle is, because large vehicles use more paint than small ones.

As a general rule of thumb, you would need about one gallon of high quality automotive paint for a mid-sized vehicle. It's best to get 1.5 gallons, though, because of the possibility of overlapping or spilling paint.

If the paint job is on a motorcycle, a quart of paint would do just fine. If you have a touring motorcycle with an extra body panel on the front (such as the Harley-Davidson Electra Glide), get two quarts just to be safe.
